In this article let us learn how to multiply and simplify rational numbers. If fractions were not used, we could not be able to describe a semicircle, a quadrant, half of a pizza etc...Any whole can be divided into smaller parts and these need to be represented in the number system. These number representations are called fractions. I like to share this Simplifying Negative Exponents with you all through my article.
Introduction to multiply and simplify calculator:
The set of natural numbers, N is the counting numbers. The set of whole numbers, W includes zero and all natural numbers. Set of integers consists of natural numbers, zero and negative of the natural numbers. Set of rational numbers Q, consists of all integers along with positive and negative fractions. Any number which can be expressed in the form `a/b` , where a and b are integers. and b ? 0 is a rational number.
Ex: `3/5` is a rational number where 3 and 5 are integers and denominator is not equal to 0.
There are an infinite number of integers and rational numbers, positive as well as negative.
Standard form of rational number: Please express your views of this topic Real Numbers Definition by commenting on blog.
Denominator is always positive
Fractions are simplified so that the numerator and denominator have common divisors other than 1.
Ex: `(-2)/3, (-4)/9`
How to Multiply and Simplify Without Using a Calculator:
Step 1: Multiply the numerator
Step 2: Multiply the denominator
Step 3: Check if the numerator and denominator have common divisors other than 1.
Step 4: If yes, divide the numerator as well as denominator with the common divisor.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4, till we obtain the standard form of the rational number
Ex: `21/15 xx 3/7`
Step 1: Multiply the numerator. So, 21 x 3 = 63
Step 2: Multiply the denominator. So, 15 x 7 = 105
Step 3: Check if the numerator and denominator have common divisors other than 1.
63 and 105 has 3 as its common divisor.
Step 4: Divide the numerator as well as denominator with the common divisor 3.
`21/15 xx 3/7 = 63/105 = (63 -: 3)/(105 -: 3) = 21/35`
Step 5: 21 and 35 has common divisor 7
Step 6: Divide the numerator as well as denominator with the common divisor 7.
`21/35 = (21-:7)/(35-:7) = 3/5`
Problems for Practice on Multiply and Simplify:
Q :1 Find the product of 1/3, -4/5
Ans: -4/15
Q :2 Find the product of 5/6, 12/15
Ans: 2/3
